ZOMBA

Zomba, a city in southern Malawi offers scenic vistas as well as historical highlights and architecture. You will begin your tour from Heritage Hotel by Serendib which is located in Limbe, the commercial hub of Blantyre. From Limbe you will be picked up by your Serendib guide who will drive you to Zomba.

Located just forty miles north of Blantyre, Zomba was the former capital of Malawi and served as its political epicentre. This city is believed to have won a prize for being the prettiest capital in British Colonial Africa.

In a beautiful setting below the plateau of the same name, this was the first settlement of colonial administration and remnants of this can be seen in the town’s architectural buildings and monuments. The ‘Cobbe Barracks’ are home to the King African Rifles (now the Malawi Rifles) and a clock tower has been built as a first world war memorial. The ‘Gymkhana Club’ and ‘Old Residency’ of Nyasaland’s first commissioner are some of the buildings that reflect the town’s rich historical heritage.

Zomba Plateau

A highlight of your tour will be a visit to Zomba Plateau, an escarpment which occupies a land area of about 130 square kilometers, and rises to overlook hillsides and valleys.  The plateau offers plenty of hiking trails including one to the Queen’s View, ‘bottomless’ Chingwe’s Hole, Mulunguzi Dam, William’s Falls and Ku Chawe. You can also try horse riding trails when visiting the plateau.

Other areas to visit on your tour include a visit to the botanical gardens, tree-lined avenues with old colonial houses, the town market, war memorial and the Amitofo Care Center (ACC) – a non-profit organization with a vision to empower less privileged children in Africa.
